Grenada Health for Visitors

The General Hospital is located in the capital city of St. George. The Princess Alice Hospital is located in the northern parish of St. Andrew and the Princess Royal Hospital is located on the island of Carriacou. There are also various private clinics and doctors throughout the islands. Visitors requiring health care in Grenada are required to pay upfront for treatment.

The main government hospital can handle a wide range of treatments, but serious cases may require an emergency evacuation. Medical care in Grenada can be costly.

A hyperbaric chamber is available in St. Augustine's Medical Services in Grenada.

Travel health insurance is recommended.

Vaccine-Preventable Diseases

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccinations.

Typhoid, Hepatitis A, and B vaccinations are recommended.

Yellow Fever vaccinations are required if you are traveling from a country with a risk of Yellow Fever virus transmission.

Food and Water Concerns

Tap water is usually safe to drink, however, it is still best to drink bottled water and avoid ice.

Mosquito-borne Diseases

There is a risk of zika and Dengue fever virus transmission and cases of chikungunya virus have also been confirmed in Grenada.

Because of the pregnancy risks, travelers should consult the CDC Travelers’ Health website for the most current recommendations for Zika.

Prevention

  • Use a repellent containing 20%-30% DEET or 20% Picaridin on exposed skin.  Re-apply to the manufacturer's directions.
  • Wear neutral-colored (beige, light grey) long-sleeved clothing and long pants.
  • Pre-soak or spray the outer layer of clothing and gear with Permethrin
  • Ensure that all hatch and window screens work properly and use mosquito nets if possible.

Animals

Rabid dogs are common in Grenada. There may be limited or no rabies treatment available if you are bitten or scratched by a dog or other mammal while in Grenada.

There are no poisonous snakes in Grenada.

Prescription Drugs

Pharmacies are usually well stocked and prescription medicine is available. If traveling with prescription medication, bring the original packaging with your doctor’s prescription.
