The German healthcare system is a dual public-private system that dates back to the 1880s, making it the oldest in Europe. Today its doctors, specialists, and facilities make it one of the very best healthcare systems in the world. All German residents can access the healthcare system through public health insurance in Germany. Non-residents need to have private insurance coverage to access healthcare. Temporary visitors will typically need to pay for treatment and claim reimbursement later.
If you are from the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland and staying only temporarily, you may use your EHIC card.
Germany travel insurance is a mandatory health insurance plan for travellers and visitors that covers your medical needs while in Germany. This insurance should have a minimum coverage of €30,000 and apart from Germany, it should also be valid in all Schengen countries.
Vaccine-Preventable-Diseases:
Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines.
Everyone 5 years of age and older should get fully vaccinated for COVID-19 before travel.
CDC recommends vaccinations for Hepatitis A & B and Measles.
Other Disease Concern:
Tick borne encephalitis (TBE) can be transmitted throughout Germany.
Prescription Drugs:
Pharmacies can be found all over German cities and towns, and are instantly-recognisable by the large red “A” on their signs.
Your prescription can be filled at any pharmacy (Apotheke) in Germany. Note that the laws on dispensing drugs are very strict in Germany and you will not be able to get medication, such as antibiotics, without a valid prescription from a German doctor (foreign prescriptions are not accepted).
