Germany - Local Customs

Mar 20, 2025

Never show the Nazi salute or sport any kind of Nazi symbol. Doing so is considered a grave offense and you can get arrested, with a 5 year prison sentence if you get caught.

Avoid pointing a finger to your head as it is considered an insult. It basically means you are saying that the person is crazy.

Chewing gum or placing your hands inside your pocket while talking to someone is considered impolite and disrespectful.

Saunas, a minority of swimming pools and even some public parks on sunny days are considered to be "clothing free," at least at particular times.

It is necessary to raft out in some harbours, i.e. boats lie alongside each other.

It is courteous to ask permission before tying alongside another yacht, but this should never be refused unless the maximum number of boats permitted to raft out in a particular harbour has been reached.
