Puerto Baquerizo Moreno (Wreck Bay) - Activities, Attractions & Shopping

The Tourist Information place is a couple of blocks back from the front and near the church; they have free booklets and DVDs about the islands with excellent maps and pictures of the various sites.

San Cristobal has one main road, brand-new and in excellent condition. One can take an organized tour with a bus to visit the island, or your agent can organize a taxi by the hour (US$10 per hour in 2015). Visit the Highlands, the crater lake, a couple of beaches (the sea lions nursery), the turtle’s laboratory and research center and much more. Snorkel with the sea lions at one of the beaches or the magical cove at the Darwin statue.

SSCA Cruising Station is SharkSky (Manolo and Martina). Lots of positive reports about this couple.

There are a number of independent (free) activities possible here and some worthwhile land tours and diving excursions.

The educational/interpretive Galapagos Discovery Centre above the pier is a good walk, as are the adjacent short hiking loops up to Las Tijeretas, with beach and snorkeling in the coves below.

A commercial diving trip to Kicker Rock is rated very highly. Strong snorkellers can also enjoy this trip.

Shopping

Markets - There are good fresh fruit and vegetable stores located on the corner next to the only set of traffic lights in town.

Open Monday to Friday until 2000, weekend hours may differ. Most small stores close for a siesta in the afternoon. Generally, avoid shopping on a Sunday.

Supermarkets

Mercado Municipal Rosianas and Calypso. Located opposite the Port Captain's office. Open from Monday to Friday 0600 - 1900, Saturday to Sunday until 1200.
