Conditions at government hospitals vary, and specialized equipment is not always available. The majority of government and private hospitals are well-equipped. Cash payment for appointments and procedures is expected at private facilities.

Cities with the most expensive costs of medical treatment are Cairo, Alexandria, and Hurghada.

Dental procedures in Egypt can vary in cost.

Travel insurance is recommended.

Vaccine-Preventable Diseases:

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccinations.

Vaccinations against hepatitis A and B, as well as typhoid, are recommended.

Poliovirus has been identified in Egypt in the past year. Polio vaccination is recommended for some travelers.

There is no risk of yellow fever in this country, however, there is a certificate requirement. A Yellow Fever vaccination is required for visitors arriving from countries with a risk for yellow fever​.

Food and Water Concerns:

Be cautious with your food and water consumption. Stick to bottled or purified water and avoid ice in drinks. To limit the danger of foodborne infections, choose well-cooked meals and fruits that you can peel yourself.

Mosquito-borne Diseases:

There is a risk of dengue and zika transmission in the country.

Because of the pregnancy risks, travelers should consult the CDC Travelers’ Health website for the most current recommendations for Zika.

Prevention:

  • Use a repellent containing 20%-30% DEET or 20% Picaridin on exposed skin. Re-apply according to the manufacturer's directions.
  • Wear neutral-colored (beige, light grey) long-sleeved clothing.
  • Pre-soak or spray the outer layer of clothing and gear with permethrin.
  • Ensure that the hatch and window screens work properly.

There is also a risk of insect or tick-borne diseases in some areas of Egypt. This includes diseases such as Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic fever, Leishmaniasis, Rift Valley fever, and African tick-bite fever.

Animals:

Rabid dogs are common in Egypt. If you are bitten or scratched by a dog or other mammal while in Egypt, there may be limited or no rabies treatment available. Consider rabies vaccination if you will be around dogs or wildlife.

Prescription Drugs:

Pharmacies are widely available in Egypt and many medications are available over-the-counter.

If traveling with a prescription medication, it should be clearly labeled and in original packaging accompanied by the medical prescription or note from your doctor.
