Ascension Island - Security

Ascension Security Details

The level of crime on Ascension Island is very low. Crimes or violence against residents or visitors are virtually unheard of.

Following an unprovoked shark attack in July 2017, when a US citizen paddle-boarding approx. 30m from shore in English Bay was badly injured by two Great Whites, the island government now advises no swimming. Yachts anchored in Clarence Bay should avoid entering the water due to sharks and strong rip currents.

Visitors hiring cars should be aware that wild sheep and donkeys can congregate on the roads, especially during wet weather.
