Ascension Immigration Procedures for Yacht Crew

Do I Need a Visa?

All visitors to Ascension Island must obtain an E-visa prior to arrival (except certain members of the armed forces and government officials), have a valid passport with at least six months validity from the date of entry and have medical insurance cover (see below). Applications for entry visas should be made at least 14 days before the intended arrival date in Ascension. It should be noted that if a short stay of 3 days or less is planned, then a landing permit can be applied for and the E-visa is not necessary for yacht crew. However, to avoid delays and complications with Immigration, it is better to apply for the E-visa. Nationals from some countries will not be issued with a visa. For more details, see here.

How to Apply for an E-Visa

To apply for an E-visa go to the Ascension Island eVisa Portal. E-visas must be paid for on application.

Cruisers have reported encountering problems with Sage Pay (for payment online for the E-visa).

Alternatively, payment can be made in St. Helena via the local bank. It is also possible to apply for the visa with the authorities in St. Helena (although this does require a long-stay in St. Helena while you wait for the visa). Cruisers have reported having assistance from St. Helena Tourist Office to get the visa pushed through faster than 14 days.

Payment can also be made by bank transfer to Ascension Immigration. Contact them for bank transfer details. Immigration Office at Ascension Island Police Detachment. Tel: (247) 66412 or E-mail: police.admin@ascension.gov.ac See Ascension Island eVisa - Frequently Asked Questions For any other issues with applying for the E-visa contact aigenquiries@ascension.gov.ac.

How long can I stay?

The maximum length of stay for tourists is three months.

Medical Insurance

Evidence of sufficient medical insurance cover with a minimum cover of £1m is required.  This cover must include medical evacuation (as evacuation by air ambulance alone can cost this much). Last updated:  April 2025
