Where is Maumere?

Maumere is on the north coast of the island of Flores and is the main entry point for many international yachts sailing the northern route into Indonesia around the top of East Timor.

The largest town in Flores and a commercial port,  Maumere lies towards the eastern end of the island.   Situated on Indonesia's Ring of Fire, an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale killed 2,500 people in and around Maumere in 1992 and in 2013 a volcanic eruption on Palue, 40nm NW of Maumere killed six people.

Cruiser Highlights for Maumere:

Maumere is the fast-growing love-aboard scuba diving tourist hub for this region.  All the usual tourist amenities with easy public transport to the airport and local restaurants and hotels provide Indonesian fare and hospitality at a reasonable price.

About 80 miles west of Maumere is the 17 Islands Riung Marine Park which is made of 24 most uninhabited islands.    The islands are home to huge flying fox colonies, Timor deer, and Mbou - the less fearsome, smaller cousing of the Komodo Dragon.
