If travelling on from Kupang, take advantage of ATMs to obtain Indonesian currency as they are scarce elsewhere and many of the small island markets do not have card facilities or ATMs. Larger department stores may accept cards.
ATMs have a limit of 1 million rupiahs (about $100) for each transaction but you can do multiple transactions from a single machine.
Australian currency notes are extremely difficult to exchange.
