History:

  • March 15, 2020 borders closed.
  • At that time there were many boats out cruising for the winter months. As a result of that closure, many were stranded and not able to return to the hurricane safety of the Rio Dulce. On May 31, Rio Dulce marinas petitioned the President of Guatemala to allow the stranded boats to return. In the region of 140 boats put their names on the list, desperate to get back to the Rio Dulce. The President subsequently approved this petition as “Humanitarian Assistance” and provided the list of boats to the various government agencies. A total of 80 boats gained entry.
  • September 18, 2020 all borders opened after six months of closure and international flights resumed. Either proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test needed to be presented to enter the country.
  • August 2022, all restrictions were lifted.
