Savusavu - Clearance

Sep 15, 2024

General Clearance

Refer to the main Fiji Formalities page for detailed clearance information including prior notification before arrival.

Yachts are not permitted to anchor anywhere in Fiji waters before checking into a Clearance Port, and the rules state that you MUST check-in the day of your arrival. Cruisers warn of substantial fines.

Cruisers arriving on a Sunday have reported that the authorities forced them to clear in the same day and pay the appropriate overtime fees. Bear in mind that clearance after normal working hours, on weekends and holidays incurs much higher charges so time your arrival accordingly if possible - preferably in the morning.

International Clearance

On arrival, and before entering the creek, yachts should first hail the Port Authority on VHF Channel 16. It is unlikely you will get an answer, so then proceed to contact either the Copra Shed Marina, Waitui Marina or Nawi Island Marina on VHF Channel 16 (they are the only three operations who undertake International Clearance whether you are using their respective facilities or anchoring out). The marinas will contact the authorities on your behalf.  Timings for marina dockmasters are 6.30am to 7.00pm on VHF Channel 16 and the dockmasters work on weekends as well.

Do not enter the creek until advised. If clearance is possible at your chosen marina, proceed directly there. If not, or you prefer not to use a marina, you can anchor between the commercial wharf and the red markers on the reef off Nakama creek entrance while you wait for clearance. Or you will be told to pick up one of the quarantine mooring balls near the entrance.

Boats are visited first by a Health Officer then followed separately by Customs, Immigration and Bio Security.

Finally you will need to walk up to the hospital to the Biosecurity office to pay your fees.

Domestic Clearance

A cruising permit is required for domestic cruising. See Clearance for details.  You cannot sail to any other destination in Fiji until you have received this from customs and immigration officials. Current reports indicate that it is taking up to three days to receive a cruising permit from officials in Savusavu.  Be patient and explore the town.

Biosecurity

Officials will ask to see any meat and poultry, also honey and honey products that you have on board.  Vegetables appear to be OK according to recent cruiser reports.

Note

If you do not intend to stay on the quarantine mooring balls for the night, make this clear to the authorities as the short (3 hr) stay on their ball will incur a cost.
