The waters of the Mar de las Calmas underwater reserve are considered to be one of the best areas for diving in the entire archipelago because of the marine fauna and numerous underwater caves.
There are more than 50 dive centres on the island.
South of the town of Valverde is the most important natural monument on El Hierro - the sacred Garoe tree - revered by the island's ancient inhabitants for the plant's ability to collect airborne water on its leaves.
