Description:
Once the center of the islands whaling industry, the port of Lajes do Pico, on the south side of the island is very pleasant, with good restaurants.
Following Hurricane Lorenzo which passed over the Azores at the beginning of October 2019, berthing facilities in Lajes do Pico were seriously damaged. However, facilities have been repaired for visiting yachts who are free to visit once clearance has been carried out in Horta.
Entrance Notes and Cautions:
The entrance can be rather daunting, but according to reports, is perfectly safe if you follow the buoys.
Cruiser Highlights:
The historical Festa dos Baleeiro Festivities, started as a result of a vow made by whale hunters to the Lourdes Virgin in 1883, is held in the last week of August.
