Thursday Island (also known locally as just 'T.I') and Horn Island are located off the very northern tip of Queensland in the Torres Strait (between the Australian Mainland and Papua New Guinea). While Horn Island is the larger of the two, TI is more heavily populated and has more services, including Australian Border Force and Biosecurity officials.
TI is a small and friendly place to stop, but it can be very windy here and anchoring is the only option. Tides can be very strong through here as well so it is advisable to contact the officials for advise on where to anchor. They will most likely direct you to Horn Island as conditions can get rough at Thursday Island.
Larger vessels need to come between Goods & Friday Islands and follow the shipping lane.
If this is your first Port of Entry for Australia, expect a friendly welcome and to be hailed by radio from the Australian Border Force aircraft. Fuel and some provisions available.
