Antarctica Immigration Procedures for Yacht Crew

No visa is required to visit Antarctica.

The Antarctic Treaty’s Protocol on Environmental Protection requires that all visitors to Antarctica (who are citizens of one of the countries that signed the Antarctica Treaty) must obtain a permit to enter.

To obtain information on your specific case and apply for authorization, it is recommended to contact your competent authority (see Clearance).

However, a visa and a passport may be required for travel to the country from which you’re embarking on the Antarctic.

It should be noted that no countries have embassies in Antarctica.

If you lose your passport or require assistance in any other way, you should contact the embassy in the next destination on your itinerary. Usually, this is Argentina or Chile.

Note: Antarctica is only accessible to most vessels during the Austral summer. Typically, yachting expeditions to the Antarctic Peninsula take place from November to March.

Permits are typically not issued for more than one Antarctic summer season.
