Hokkaido - Clearance

Aug 22, 2023

There are number of ports of entry on the island.

See Japan Formalities for full details of arrival and departure protocols.

Kushiro, in the north, is a Port of Entry and the most common one used for those clearing out of Japan to go to Alaska (Aleutians etc.) and Canada.

Hakodate is popular, especially for those going direct to Canada or Seattle, not via Alaska.

Otaru on the NW coast and Wakkanai at the far northern tip of Hokkaido are also good options for going to the Aleutians and are good alternatives to Kushiro.

For those entering Japan from the Aleutians, Wakkanai is the best option.

Uniformed Customs Officers are likely to be waiting and will seek permission to come aboard and check your paperwork.
