Anchorages

There is an anchorage just north of the entrance channel. There are quite a few patches of coral as well as sand. Depth is about 25 to 30ft. Any stay here is limited to 72 hours.

It is also possible to anchor off Kailua-Kona Wharf, about 3.5 miles south. There are charges for anchoring and use of facilities onshore. It is very rolly here.

Marina/Dock

Honokohau is the safest harbor on the island as it was blasted out of solid rock. It is also the only place where boats can be hauled out.

All berthing here is med-moor style. There is no electricity on the dock.

DLNR Visitor Berths

There are two (2) designated visitor’s berths run by the DLNR (Dept of Land & Natural Resources). These are stern-ties to the first wharf visible upon entry to the harbor, where fuel is available. Although they are technically not reserved, arrangements begin well in advance of arrival by application to the DLNR rep for the harbor. This includes completing multiple forms, providing insurance to meet Hawaii’s requirements, etc. and may take time to complete.

Unclear if the transient berths are available to multihulls.

Marina Berths

“The Yard” Marina (formerly known as Gentry’s) is located in the small boat inner harbor and may have available space.
