Cruisers have recommended Max, an island resident, as a tour guide and scuba/snorkel guide. The history of the island is complex and fascinating, and diving at Champion Rock and snorkeling at Devils Crown are said to be excellent.
Max, who also answers to Johnni (Whatsapp +593 96 705 9117) is apparently "farmer, fisherman, tour guide, naturalist, restauranteur, agent etc" . He was the mayor for a decade and the current mayor is his wife. For $56 (2024) he will take you up into the hills to see the tortoises and the pirate caves as well as a snorkelling tour where you'll swim with sea lions and turtles.
