Get a bus (extremely cheap and air-conditioned) from the capital to Jarabacoa (small city in the mountains from where you can trek to Pico Duarte, the tallest mountain in the Caribbean, about 3087 metres. Go up to the campsite on one day, and up to the top and down again on day two. Arrange with a guide) and Cabarete (perfect place to Kite and Windsurf. The beach has a lot of nice bars and restaurants as well).
Calle Duarte, the main street through town is lined with gift shops, cafes and restaurants.
Santo Domingo is a very interesting town, in particular, the Trujillo museum (Museo Memorial de la Resistencia) – see Trip Advisor.
