This city forms the eastern end of the Trans Canada Highway which stretches right across the country to Vancouver, a distance of some 8000 kms (5000 miles). Although technically, St John's Newfoundland and Victoria, Vancouver Island are designated as part of the highways, they are connected only by ferry.
Taxis are numerous and there is a city bus service.
