Take a taxi to the caldeira, walk around the crater rim, then stroll back to Horta (or make sure you have the taxi driver’s number).
On the way back, the Jardim Botánico has a fascinating collection of endemic species and a superb orchid house, the donation of a Finnish family who spent time on the island.
