Greenland - Weather

The weather is cold all year round and the winters are particularly harsh with some ports being icebound until well into the summer. Temperatures are low even in the summer months. The prevailing winds in the southern part are S or SW, while easterly winds predominate further north. Winds are light and variable in summer. Depending on latitude, the midnight sun is visible from the end of May until the end of July.

Ice conditions: Ice Control Tel. 3 52 44, 3 52 54. Ice Control may be contacted via coast radio stations. If the station is out of VHF range, such as when approaching Cape Farvel, contact should be made through Qaqortoq (Julianhab) Radio. Ice Control will indicate ice limits and advise on the best course to sail.

SAR Greenland worked with the DMA to develop a program that suits small sailors and boats with a limited internet connection.

The program provides ice reports, AIS, safety info., weather, forecasts etc.

Aasiaat Radio operates along the west coast of Greenland and normally listen out on VHF Ch. 16 from Cape Farewell to north of Kullorsuaq.
On the east coast of Greenland Aasiaat Radio only have 3 sites around Tasiilaq. This does not cover the fiord system here.
Working channels are listed in Admiralty List of Radio Signals NP281(2), also in the ITU MARS database: https://www.itu.int/mmsapp/CoastStation/list, with the MMSI number 00 331 1000.
Aasiaat Radio also has a GMDSS A2 area covering from Qaanaaq in the north around Cape Farewell to the mid-Blosseville coast just south of Ittorqqortoormiit (Scoresby Sound). They are listening on normal medium wave working channels and answering on the appropriate transmitting channels. There are nine different sites, the most popular around Cape Farewell is the 2265 kHz where they listen on 2090 kHz. They are not listening on 2182 kHz as the DSC system covers the Distress frequency.
Aasiaat Radio are on duty 24/7 in English, Danish and Greenlandic.
