Aasiaat - General Info

Sep 27, 2023

Description:

This town was previously called Egedesminde. It lies on an island on the southern side of Disko Bay on the west coast of Greenland.

This is a Port of Entry and commercial port.

Ice-free season here is now much longer (normally April to January) and it has become a popular over-wintering port for foreign cruising boats with a haulout yard. There is an airfield with daily connections to Kangerlussuaq/Copenhagen and to the rest of Greenland.

It is often used as the jumping off point for yachts which attempt the Northwest passage, or those venturing further north.

From Aasiaat northwards, it rarely blows above 20 knots during summertime.

It is noted for its colourful houses and whales, which are a common sight here.

Cruiser Highlights:

Aasiaat Radio is the last maritime radio station in Greenland and talk to most of the sailboats coming up along the coast.
Nanna (nsa@tusass.gl) is intended to take over from Bo Mogensen (BM@tusass.gl) in 2024.

Position:

68° 42.66'N, 52° 52.56'W (entrance)
