French Guiana is an Overseas Department of France (département d’outre-mer) and part of the European Union. However, it is not part of the Schengen Area.

Visitors require a passport valid for 6 months. For EU citizens an identity card will suffice.

Do I need a visa?

Use the official France Visa Wizard to find out if you need a visa.

For short stays (up to three months - 90 days) no visa is required for the following:

  • Citizens of the EU, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan as well as many other countries.
  • Mainland France residence permit holders (carte de séjour).

Other nationals must obtain a visa in advance.

For details on how to get a visa, see the Official France Diplomatie website.

Other Visa Information

A short-stay visa issued by France or other Schengen countries is not valid for entry into French Guiana.

To enter French Guiana, you must get a short-stay national visa.

For long stays, only citizens of the EU, Andorra, Monaco, and Switzerland do not require a visa.
