Timor-Leste has been stable for a number of years, but there are ongoing security risks.
While there has been unrest at various times in the past, currently all is peaceful there. However, most travel advisories recommend that anyone visiting the country should exercise a high degree of personal security and awareness at all times.
Crime can be a problem in Dili, but it seems to be mainly between local gangs. There have been a number bag-snatchings, during the hours of daylight as well as at night as well as incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships in neighbouring waters, so mariners should be vigilant.
Reports from cruising yachts visiting Dili in the last 12 months indicate visitors will receive a friendly welcome. (see the Comments section for information from SV Sonrisa).
However, as with any areas where there have been security problems in the past, cruisers planning to visit Dili should check the latest travel advisories.
