Arriving in the Dominican Republic with Pets On Board

An import permit is not required for pets entering the Dominican Republic with their owners. Up to five personal pets can be imported to the Dominican Republic without an import permit.

A Health Certificate must be presented upon arrival, and should be taken to the Department of Agriculture during check-in procedures.

Health Certificate

A Health Certificate must be issued and signed by a licensed veterinarian showing the name and address of the owner and complete identification of the dog or cat (name, breed, sex and age).

The health certificate must also show the animal has been vaccinated for:

  • Rabies
  • Distemper
  • Parvo
  • Plus influenza if you choose (not required by law in the DR)

Rabies Titer Testing in the DR

Rabies Titer testing in the DR has to be sent to Germany which takes 2-3 months for the process and costs approx. 30,000 pesos.

Booster Shots

Are available at local veterinarians around the DR.

Pet Friendly

Check whether restaurants are pet friendly or not and if pet friendly, please be respectful and keep dogs on the lead and use poop bags at all times.

Birds

Birds cannot be brought into the DR without prior application for a permit, plus they will need to go into quarantine. More details are available on the Directorate General of Livestock webpage.
