Dominican Republic - Emergencies

Apr 04, 2025

Emergency services (police, firemen, ambulances) Dial 911.

The National Police have indicated that a 911-call will activate harbor security patrols (in particular in Luperon) at all times.

Locally in Luperon, the Navy can be reached on VHF channel 68, 24/7 in case of emergency.

Throughout the DR use the Armada DR Rescue Call Center: (809) 604-6506/2670

To initiate a rescue at sea call MRCC Fort-de-France (Martinique). They will hear you on VHF Ch 16 anywhere from Northern St Vincent to half way between Guadeloupe and Antigua via several sensitive radio repeaters.  They monitor comms 24/7 and can speak both French and English. https://www.facebook.com/MRCCFortdeFrance

For medical emergencies on the N/NE coast, reputable marinas such as Ocean World Puerto Plata and Puerto Bahia Samana will handle all communications (Spanish/English) and get you to a good hospital in an emergency. In Luperón call other cruisers on VHF 68 24/7 or 911 for a free ambulance to the free basic government hospital/clinic (take your passport).
In Samana Town anchorage call on VHF 68 or dial 911.

Remember all basic government medical, ambulance services are free to tourists/cruisers. If they cannot handle the problem, then they will make arrangements to get you to a private hospital or clinic. All you have to do at government hospitals is pay for your own prescriptions. And, it’s always nice to return with a small gift for the super friendly and helpful staff and doctors as a ‘thank you.’
