Dominican Republic - Communications

Apr 04, 2025

International Dialing Code for the Dominican Republic is +809.

Mobile & Internet:

The largest telecommunications company is Claro. Cable internet and DSL are available in most parts of the country with many providers offering 3G and in some cases 4G wireless internet service.

Bring an unlocked phone which you can use all around the Caribbean then take your passport to Altice or Claro. USD$2 buys you a local SIM card for airtime or data, rechargeable all over the DR. You can also buy monthly data packages. It recommended to put 100 pesos of minutes on your phone every three to four weeks to keep your number. You can recharge minutes at pharmacies, supermarkets and lotto’s.

Just about everyone uses WhatsApp in DR due to high call charges, so it is recommended to get WhatsApp on your unlocked cell phone/tablet prior to travel to the DR, or the Caribbean. The set up requires a working cell service and number.

The @ sign is achieved by holding down ‘alt’ and typing 64 on local computer keyboards.

Post:

The mail service in the DR for outgoing mail is quite good and inexpensive; receiving mail in the DR is less certain. DHL, Fed Ex and UPS are readily available.
