Christmas Island Restrictions

Food Items:

Quarantine has been known to be strict and eggs and some meat products may be confiscated, or sealed on board. Depending on the officer in charge, some fresh fruit and vegetables may be kept.

Garbage Disposal:

Arrangements for the disposal of waste ashore are to be approved by the Biosecurity officer from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

Garbage ashore is limited to cardboard, plastics, and metals only. No food, or items with food residue, are permitted ashore. Garbage is inspected once, at the vessels time of arrival. For the remainder of your visit you cannot discharge any waste.

No garbage or galley washes to be dumped into the waters anywhere around the Island.

Asylum Seeking Vessels:

In the event that a suspected Illegal Entry Vessel arrives with suspected unauthorized Non-Citizens - in other words an illegal fishing vessel arrives with asylum seekers - yachts must keep well clear of the situation at all times. Swimming in the Cove is actively discouraged because of health concerns while such a vessel is in the Cove.

Protected Species:

Birds and turtles are protected species in the National Park.

All land crabs on Christmas Island are also protected.

It is an offence to recklessly or deliberately kill crabs or interfere with wildlife.
