Chile - Security

Apr 15, 2025

Cruisers report that security in Tierra del Fuego is just simply not an issue. Many reports never locking their boats. Dinghies with outboards can be left at the jetty without any problems.

Opportunistic street crime, however, can be a problem in towns and cities and in areas popular with tourists.

Nationwide protests often take place on 11 September (anniversary of the military coup) and 1 May (Workers’ Day). They can become violent. The largest protests usually take place in central Santiago. Avoiding large, rowdy crowds is a good practice wherever you travel.
