Cayman Islands - Health

Jan 29, 2025

Grand Cayman has three well-equipped hospitals: one in the eastern portion of the island and two in George Town, the capital. Faith Hospital, a smaller facility in Cayman Brac, can handle the majority of common dental and medical issues. The cost of treatment is high and cash payment may be required upfront. Severe cases are typically stabilized in the territory before being sent to the US.

Adequate travel insurance is advised.

Patients requiring treatment for decompression illness are treated in George Town Hospital, Grand Cayman, and is readily available 24 hours a day, every day of the year on an on-call basis.

Vaccine-Preventable Diseases:

Be sure you are up-to-date on routine vaccines.

Hepatitis A and B vaccinations are recommended for unvaccinated travelers to the Cayman Islands.

In addition, you should consider getting vaccinated against typhoid and hepatitis A, which is transmitted by contaminated food or water, as well as hepatitis B, which is transmitted via blood and other body fluids.

Food and Water Concerns:

Island water is usually potable but check with the source.

Ciguatera is present and consumption of fish containing toxins can cause serious illness (paralysis and low blood pressure) and very unpleasant symptoms (itching, numbness, dizziness).

Mosquito-borne Diseases:

Dengue fever and Zika virus have been reported.

Because of the pregnancy risks, travelers should consult the CDC Travelers’ Health website for the most current recommendations for Zika.

Prevention:

  • Use a repellent containing 20%-30% DEET or 20% Picaridin on exposed skin. Re-apply according to the manufacturer's directions.
  • Wear neutral-colored (beige, light grey) long-sleeved clothing.
  • Pre-soak or spray the outer layer of clothing and gear with permethrin.
  • Ensure that the hatch and window screens work properly.

Plants and animals:

Scorpionfish inhabit shallow reef areas around Cayman.

Prescription Drugs:

It’s easy to get over-the-counter medicine on Grand Cayman, but more difficult on Cayman Brac or Little Cayman.

Prescription medications are typically only available with a valid prescription from a licensed healthcare provider.

Emergency Numbers:
