Canaries Security Concerns for Sailors

Overall Crime and Safety

There is little major crime in the Canary Islands, most is petty such as pickpocketing and purse snatching (more common in the cities and during festivals) and breaking into rental cars.

Maritime Issues

Yacht Security

Dinghy and outboard thefts have been reported from yachts at anchor in Arrecife harbor, Lanzarote and La Gomera.

A burglary was also reported from a yacht in Las Palmas Marina.

Be sure to check related security reports for the Canaries.

Migrant Boats

There has been a sharp rise in the number of migrants arriving in the Canary Islands with the Atlantic route from West Africa to the Canary Islands being increasingly used by smugglers who launch boats from Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Senegal and even the Gambia. See this report for more details and what do do if you encounter a migrant boat. If transiting to Gran Canaria, Tenerife and El Hierro, keep a sharp look out.

If you see a migrant boat:

  • Do not approach
  • Report to MRCC Las Palmas
  • Salvamento de Las Palmas: Tel. 928 467 757 / 928 467 955
    Salvamento de Tenerife: Tel. 922 597 551 / 922 597 552
  • laspalmas@sasemar.es
  • Follow directions from MRCC until released
  • Remain at a safe distance at all times
