Blue Defenders NGO
Bonaire resident and wildlife photographer, Casper Douma, founded Blue Defenders in 2023 to conduct megafauna research throughout the Caribbean, starting with the ABC islands, particularly Yarari Marine Mammal & Shark Santuary. The goal is to map numbers, species and movements outside the marine park (up to 60 meters depth) to more effectively protect megafauna. Blue Defenders are also involved in Marine Mammals Strandings Bonaire. Sightings can be made via the website.
Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire (STCB)
If you're visiting Bonaire and would like to learn more about sea turtles, go to STCB's bi-monthly presentation at Yellow Submarine on Kaya Playa Lechi 24. Every second and fourth Wednesday of the month, volunteers and staff talk about sea turtles and the work done to protect them. Entrance is free, but please bring cash if you'd like to purchase STCB merchandise. Between January and April, STCB conducts transect-count (snorkel) surveys along the west coast of Bonaire and around Klein Bonaire. During these surveys, they count sea turtles, keystone species and fish schools. Each survey day, they conduct four surveys of one kilometre each. STCB is looking for volunteers who are on Bonaire during this time, are strong swimmers and enjoy snorkeling.
