Azores Security for Yachts

Overall Crime and Safety

The crime rate is very low in the Azores. Many islanders leave their doors open and cars unlocked.

That said, keep alert around port areas as petty crime, such as pick-pocketing and purse snatching, though uncommon, does occur.

Maritime Issues

Cruisers that visit the Azores frequently seldom lock their boat as the general security situation in the Azores feels very safe.

Noonsite has never received any security reports from foreign yachts in the Azores, until July 2025 when an American yacht reported an unsuccessful break-in while moored in Ponta Delgada Marina on the island of Sao Miguel. Read the Captain's first hand report here.

While this incident was a one-off, it is best-practice to ensure that your belongings are secure at all times and continue to practice security on board with locking your boat at night and when you go ashore. If staying in a gated marina, ensure that the gate is securely closed after you and do not let anyone follow you in. This is good security behaviour to adopt if venturing onward into mainland Europe.
