Azores Immigration

Immigration are called Servico de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras, or SEF.

Immigration Procedure

The Azores is the EU's most western-most border, so visas and passports are checked thoroughly. You will need to see Immigration on arrival and departure.

Do I need a Visa?

The archipelago comes under Portugal's Schengen Area agreement and therefore has similar visa regulations.

Most EU nationals and those from the UK, USA and Canada, can visit for up to 90 days in a six month period with no visa required.

Sailors from other countries that require a visa should obtain one from a Portuguese embassy or consulate at the country of origin.

See Portugal/Immigration for more details.

Other Visa Information

If wishing to remain longer than 3 months, visa extensions can be requested at the Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras (Foreigners and Borders Service), which has branches in most major towns.

After 90 days in the Azores, it is possible to apply for temporary residency. The first requirement is to obtain a Número de Contribuinte (Número Fiscal) from the Finanças office, after which any SEF office can issue an Autorização de Residência (residency document).

See Noonsite's EU page for details on Schengen.

Long Stay visa information can be found here.
