Azores Health for Visitors

There are good medical facilities in the Azores with modern hospitals/health centers on every Island (other than Corvo). There are main hospitals in Ponta Delgada, Angra and Horta. Most doctors and health professionals speak good English. Pharmacies are recognised by a green cross and stock both prescription and non-prescription items.

European residents can get state-provided healthcare (including emergency care) with their European EHIC card. Medical insurance is recommended, although the cost of healthcare in the Azores is considerably lower than in other European countries.

Vaccine-Preventable Diseases:

It is not necessary to have special vaccinations when visiting the Azores, but a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if coming from an infected area (Central America and African countries). It is recommended to keep tetanus and polio vaccinations up to date.

Emergencies:

Emergency number is 112.

For a list of SAR (Salvamento) offices throughout Portugal see page 38 onwards of this document (2021).
