Where is Robe?

Robe is a small crayfishing town on the Limestone coast of South Australia and is situated on the Guichen Bay approximately 100nm south of Adelaide. It is an attractive little port with friendly locals and fresh crayfish (in season!).

It is a convenient port if caught on this coast in the strong northwest to southwest winds.  The harbor is located in an area of very sheltered water called Lake Butler.  Lake Butler was once a natural lake, where fishermen moored their boats in Guichen Bay in the summer and pulled them up over the dunes to moor in Lake Butler during the winter. A channel to the sea was cut in 1964, making Lake Butler available for safe mooring all year round.

Entrance Notes and Cautions:

Robe is known for its crayfish industry and from October through to May you will be dodging crayfish pots and floats along this part of the South Australian Coast.  Locals advise not to sail at night and in not less than 100 metres of water during these months.

The current depth of the Lake Butler marina channel is 2m at low tide.

Cruiser Highlights for Robe:

Very few international cruisers visit Robe, so if you do you will receive a warm welcome.  Look out for Ruth and Jock, two retired long term cruisers who now live ashore in Rober.  They go out of their way to meet cruisers in the marina and love to talk about sailing over dinner.

Robe's Position:

37°09′S, 139°45′E
