Argentina - Local Customs

Jun 11, 2025

Many regions of the country follow the custom of siesta– napping in the afternoon. You can expect everything to be shut down from 12.30pm until 4-5 pm. Locals usually eat dinner around 9 or 10pm which is why merienda (afternoon tea) is popular around 6pm.

As a foreigner, when speaking with strangers, it is recommended to use titles to show respect. For example: address individuals by their professional degree (“doctor,” “professor,” etc.) and use “señor” for men, “señora” for older and married women and “señorita” for a young or single woman followed by the name.

Argentinians like close physical contact when speaking to each other (greeting with a kiss or brief hug regardless of gender), although this has been greatly reduced in public because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

While Argentinians are not often punctual, keeping to a schedule is expected in business contexts.
