The official currency is the Lek. For visitors, small denomination US dollar bills will be very useful.
ATMs are plentiful in the major cities.
Be aware, in Albania they speak with new or old money. When someone states a price in Lek, be sure to clarify if it is in old or new Lek.
100 Lek is approximately 1.7 E or 1.4 USD, but in old, this is also mentioned as 1.000 Lek.
