The US Embassy in Muscat has advised all its citizens to avoid both ports in Eritrea. See US Travel Advice [BROKEN LINK].
The skipper and his British crew of a yacht refuelling in Massawa were arrested on 24th December and neither the Australian nor the British consular officials have been allowed access to them. The skipper has dual Australian and British nationality.
The Australian government says it’s “deeply concerned” about the situation.
Another incident occurred when four Germans sailed in and were similarly detained for four days before being released.
