Vanuatu: Tropical Cyclone Seru to pass East of Vanuatu

Cyclone forecasters at the Fiji Metservice have confirmed that the tropical low pressure system named Seru is expected to intensify into a Category 2 system overnight Tuesday February 25 and pass down the eastern side of Vanuatu.

In a tropical cyclone advisory the Fiji Metservice said Tropical Cyclone Seru’s current forecasted path, would see it pass down the eastern side of Vanuatu, before curling to the southeast and passing to the far south of Fiji.

The Fiji MetService has also cancelled the tropical cyclone warning for Cyclone Rae as it moves away from Fiji after bringing strong to gale force winds to the northern and eastern parts of the island nation.

Tonga Metservice still have active warnings for Cyclone Rae which is still a Category 2 system in place for their southern Islands.

Tropical Cyclone Alfred Intensifies in Coral Sea

Meanwhile, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) is tracking Tropical Cyclone Alfred as a slow-moving Category 2 system in the Coral Sea, currently about 950 km northeast of Mackay and 1000 km east northeast of Townsville on Queensland’s east coast.

The BOM said Alfred has been slow moving, but is forecast to begin moving towards the south southeast from tonight (February 25) while continuing to intensify. There is high
confidence that Alfred will remain well off the Queensland coast until at least late in the week. Beyond that, the track becomes highly uncertain and there is a risk it will move closer to the central Queensland coast over the weekend.
