The known origins of Chipiona date back to Roman times and are linked to the primitive lighthouse that existed there. After ist re-conquest from the Moors it became part of the este of the Ponce de Leon family and the duchy of Arcos. Its monuments include the sanctuarty of Regla, with a 15th century cloister. Above all there s the well-known ligthshouse in the mouth of the Guadalquivir built around the middle of the 19th century over the ruins of the primitive lighthouse of the Roman period.
