Palmyra Atoll is one of the Northern Line Islands, located almost due south of the Hawaiian Islands. It is one of the most isolated places on the planet. It is also one of the rainiest places as it gets heavy rainfall all year round.

It is an important research center and is actually one of the most preserved places in the world. Most visitors are scientists that come here to research and observe the atoll for short periods of time.

The closest neighbor is Kiribati, whose main island is located about 690 kms (429 miles) southeast of the Atoll.
