Landfall Expected in the Florida Big Bend Area
Hurricane Debby was expected to make landfall in the Florida Big Bend area on the early morning of August 5, 2024, according to a special update from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) issued at 0400 EDT.
Debby has sustained maximum winds of 80 mph, with stronger gusts. It is about 40 miles west-northwest of Cedar Key, 80 miles south-southeast of Tallahassee, Florida and is moving to the north-northeast at 12 mph.
The NHC said dangerous storm surge and wind impacts were expected along portions of the southeast U.S. coast from northeastern Florida to North Carolina through the middle of the week and storm surge warnings and tropical storm watches and warnings have been issued for portions of these areas.
(Note: The NHC says Landfall is when the center of the eye of the hurricane moves over land.)
